Have a question about Lent (General Discussion)

I was baptized a Catholic and went to a Catholic grade school, but have never read the Bible. Scoff if you will, but I just couldn't get into reading the book, and instead believed what I was told by the priests, nuns, and my parents. My question is this: is there really somewhere in the Bible that says we have to fast during Lent, and that we should not eat meat on Fridays, or is that all some of the rules of "the Church"? We all know that they abolished the "no meat on Fridays rule". And what exactly does "fasting" mean? Just eating our regular meals to stay alive but no extras like no snacking and no dessert?
