Seeking advice on a newer metal roof. I've been reading pros and cons. Anyone in particular have a newer metal roof installed on their home, resulting in no cell phone reception? What was the solution? Thanks.

We have an OLD metal roof and have very limited cellphone reception inside the house.

I have two garages, one has a metal roof and the other is entirely metal, roof and sides. No cell problems. Might just be that I'm closer to a tower? Lots of things can affect reception.

I did a little experiment with my cell phone and signals when I researched on how to make a faraday cage. That's suppose to be a box that blocks out electro magnetic pulses from the sun or nuclear blasts. I took an old metal fruit cake tin, lined it with cardboard, including the lid. Put my cell in it and put the lid back on. Called the cell from a land line and the cell would not ring. Cracked the lid about a quarter inch and then it rang.

It's not only the metal roof that causes problems with cell phones. Double thermo-paned windows proved to be a problem for us. We were having problems with calls getting dropped frequently. We remedied that by getting an internet cell station through Cellcom (Airvana) that acts as
mini cell tower inside the house. It cost about $100.

How well do you feel that the Airvana femtocell unit works? Do you still experience garbled or disrupted calls with it? I've been seeing more of those when I'm out and about working on PCs on site, and reviews have been mixed so far from those that I've asked.

It's improved our service a lot. It's reduced dropped calls and garbled reception in certain rooms. It works fine in the basement too. Your internet connection must be fast enough. When we went into the Cellcom store they gave us the website to test the internet speed in our house. Our speed is fast enough to handle the PC and cell.

All good info. It's possible that I rebuild my house in the future. I do not like shingles, nor shingling or re-roofing. Recently while at my friends house, he was getting poor reception with his rental house metal roof.

I love my metal roof. Haven't noticed any difference in cell reception since getting the new roof 3 years ago. I live in town and can see the tower from my house. Maybe that's why. Just be sure to have snow stops installed over all your doors or you'll be sorry. I tried without for the first winter and had them installed asap
